Justice Department Subpoenas NY AG James Over Trump Fraud Case

On August 8, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice issued two grand jury subpoenas to New York Attorney General Letitia James, targeting her office’s $454 million civil fraud case against President Donald Trump. The subpoenas, issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York, also seek details on James’ investigation into the National Rifle Association, raising questions about potential political motivations. The probe is examining whether James violated Trump’s civil rights in her high-profile lawsuit, which found Trump and his sons liable for inflating asset values to secure favorable loans.

James’ office, which won a landmark judgment in 2024, denounced the subpoenas as a “weaponization of the justice system.” Her attorney, Abbe Lowell, called the investigation a “blatant” act of political retribution by the Trump administration, vowing to counter with facts and law. The case against Trump, currently under appeal, resulted in over $500 million in penalties with interest, a ruling Trump has decried as biased. The NRA case, which saw former CEO Wayne LaPierre ordered to repay $4 million for misusing funds, is also under scrutiny.

The subpoenas mark an escalation in the Justice Department’s actions under Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has appointed Ed Martin to investigate James and Sen. Adam Schiff for alleged mortgage fraud. Critics argue this reflects Trump’s campaign to target political adversaries, while supporters claim it ensures accountability. With grand juries convened in Albany and Virginia, the investigations could reshape the legal and political landscape as Trump’s critics face mounting pressure.
