Texas Democrat Stages Protest on House Floor Over GOP Escort Demand

On August 18, 2025, Texas State Rep. Nicole Collier (D-Fort Worth) spent the night on the Texas House floor, refusing a Republican mandate for a law enforcement escort. The requirement, imposed by House Speaker Dustin Burrows, targeted Democrats who fled the state earlier in August to block a GOP redistricting plan by denying quorum. The plan, backed by President Donald Trump and Governor Greg Abbott, aims to create five GOP-leaning congressional seats, a move Democrats claim dilutes minority voting power.

Collier, representing a majority-minority district, called the escort demand an affront to her dignity as an elected official, vowing to protect her constituents’ voices. “These maps will harm my community,” she stated, joined by Reps. Gene Wu and Vince Perez, who stayed overnight in solidarity, equipped with snacks like dried peaches and ramen. The Democrats’ return on Monday restored quorum, allowing the House Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting to approve the maps 12-8, with a full House vote set for Wednesday.

While Burrows defended the escorts as ensuring attendance, Democrats like Rep. Penny Morales Shaw decried them as “illegitimate” overreach. The protest, praised by figures like Beto O’Rourke, has sparked a national debate over gerrymandering, with California’s Democratic-led counter-redistricting escalating tensions. As legal challenges loom, Collier’s stand highlights the fight over voting rights and political power ahead of the 2026 midterms.
