Oklahoma Mandates ‘America First’ Test for Teachers

Oklahoma has become the first state to require teachers relocating from liberal-leaning states to pass an “America First” certification test, announced State Superintendent Ryan Walters on August 1, 2025. Developed with conservative think tank PragerU, the test evaluates educators on their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, understanding of American exceptionalism, and recognition of “fundamental biological differences between boys and girls.” The move aims to ensure teachers align with Oklahoma’s curriculum standards, which emphasize patriotism and traditional values.

Walters, a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump’s education agenda, stated the test counters “woke indoctrination” from states like California and New York, where curricula include gender identity and sexual orientation education. He cited Oklahoma’s $50,000 signing bonuses for top teachers as attracting educators fleeing progressive policies. The test, set to roll out next week, has sparked debate, with critics like board member Chris Van Denhende arguing it’s redundant since teachers must already follow state standards. Walters dismissed opponents as “puppets” of teachers’ unions, accusing them of enabling leftist agendas.

Supporters, including Republican Senator Shane Jett, praise the initiative for prioritizing patriotic education over activism. Critics, however, warn it could deter qualified educators and push ideological conformity, citing PragerU’s controversial anti-LGBTQ+ content. The policy aligns with Trump’s executive order recognizing only two genders and banning transgender athletes from girls’ sports. As Oklahoma leads this charge, other red states may follow, intensifying national debates over education and ideology.
