Newsom’s Narrow Edge: California Governor Tops Trump in Favorability by 5 Points, Polls Show

Washington, D.C. – In a surprising snapshot of public sentiment amid the post-election dust-up, California Governor Gavin Newsom holds a slim lead over President Donald Trump in national favorability ratings, edging him out by 5 percentage points according to two recent polls highlighted by Newsweek. The findings, from a Yahoo/YouGov survey of 1,690 adults and an Emerson College poll of 1,000 registered voters, paint Newsom as a Democratic bright spot in a landscape dominated by Trump’s triumphant return.

The Yahoo/YouGov data, conducted August 29 to September 2, gives Newsom a net approval of -9—43% favorable to 52% unfavorable—while Trump’s sits at -14 (41% favorable to 55% unfavorable), a 3.1% margin of error notwithstanding. Emerson’s August 25-26 poll mirrors the gap, with Newsom at 42% favorable against Trump’s 37%. Political scientist Mark Shanahan of the University of Surrey told Newsweek the bump stems from Newsom’s aggressive anti-Trump posture: “He’s the first Democrat to break cover as a credible 2028 candidate, gaining interest across the spectrum.”

Newsom’s surge aligns with his high-profile jabs at Trump’s policies—from redistricting battles to climate rollbacks—positioning him as the party’s feisty counterpuncher. In June, he coyly told The Wall Street Journal a presidential run “is a path I could see unfold,” fueling speculation as Kamala Harris’ star dims. Trump, never one to mince words, fired back on Truth Social in August: “Gavin Newscum is way down in the polls. He is viewed as the man who is destroying the once Great State of California. I will save California!!!”

Yet, the lead is fragile. California’s own polls show Newsom underwater at home, with 59% of voters opposing a White House bid per Emerson in April, amid gripes over housing costs and crime. Nationally, Trump’s post-victory glow could widen the gap; a June YouGov survey had him at 40% favorable to Newsom’s 34%. As 2026 midterms loom, this 5-point tease underscores Democratic desperation for a fighter—can Newsom sustain the shine, or will it fade like morning fog over the Golden Gate? In Trump’s America, even a narrow win feels like a whisper against the roar.
