Washington, D.C. – FBI Director Kash Patel has reignited controversy over the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, leveling bombshell accusations against former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during a March 2025 interview with The Federalist. Patel alleges that Pelosi deliberately refused National Guard support authorized by then-President Donald Trump, contributing to the day’s chaos. Newly released HBO footage, obtained by the House Administration’s Subcommittee on Oversight, appears to bolster his claims, showing Pelosi acknowledging responsibility for security lapses. The revelations have intensified debates over accountability for the Capitol breach, with Republicans hailing Patel’s account as vindication and Democrats dismissing it as revisionist history.
Patel, who served as chief of staff at the Department of Defense on January 6, claims Trump verbally authorized 10,000 National Guard troops in a January 3 meeting, a directive communicated to Pelosi and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, per The American Tribune. Both declined additional support, with Bowser’s January 5 letter and the Capitol Police, reporting to Pelosi, rejecting the offer, according to Patel’s testimony to the January 6 Committee. He alleges the committee, led by Rep. Bennie Thompson, suppressed this evidence to push a narrative blaming Trump for the riot, which left five dead and over 140 officers injured, per NPR.
The HBO footage, filmed by Pelosi’s daughter Alexandra and released in June and August 2024, captures Pelosi in a panicked state, saying, “Why weren’t the National Guard there to begin with? I take responsibility for not having them just prepared for more.” Republicans, including Subcommittee Chairman Barry Loudermilk, argue this undermines Democratic claims that Trump alone was responsible, per The Daily Mail. Loudermilk accuses Pelosi of spending $20 million on a “partisan” committee to deflect blame, noting the footage was withheld until his team obtained it from HBO.
Democrats counter that Patel’s narrative distorts reality. The January 6 Committee’s report, supported by over 1,000 interviews, found Trump’s inaction delayed the National Guard’s deployment for hours as rioters stormed the Capitol, per AP News. Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer were filmed pleading with officials for aid, contradicting claims of refusal. Critics, including Sen. Dick Durbin, argue Patel’s history of promoting baseless theories, like the “fedsurrection” claim that FBI agents incited the riot, discredits his account, per CNN.
Patel’s role in funding January 6 defendants through his Kash Foundation and producing the “J6 Prison Choir” song has drawn scrutiny, with former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn calling him unfit to lead the FBI, per Bangor Daily News. Yet, supporters, including Sen. Ted Cruz, who backed Patel during his February 2025 confirmation, argue he’s exposing a cover-up, per The Economic Times. The debate, fueled by over 1,500 pardons Trump issued for rioters, remains a flashpoint as the 2026 midterms approach.
