This comes not a moment too soon…
“Trump’s fossil fuel orders are a death sentence for my generation,” said Eva Lighthiser, one of the plaintiffs.
“I’m not suing because I want to — I’m suing because I have to. My health, my future, and my right to speak the truth are all on the line. He’s waging war on us with fossil fuels as his weapon, and we’re fighting back with the Constitution,” she added.
The lawsuit was filed in Montana and challenges Trump’s disastrous executive orders that declared a so-called “National Energy Emergency.” The plaintiffs hail from Montana, Hawaii, Oregon, California, and Florida.
“Our children enjoy the same constitutional rights to life and liberty as adults, yet have been tasked with shouldering the impact of a destabilized climate system without ever having a say in the matter,” stated Dan Snyder, the Director of the Environmental Enforcement Project for Public Justice.
“President Trump’s executive orders are unlawful and intolerable, and these youth plaintiffs shall put an end to it,” he added.
The lawsuit states that Trump’s orders violate the plaintiffs’ Fifth Amendment rights to life and liberty by “deliberately worsening” destructive climate pollution that will have massive long-term negative effects on them.
It’s undeniable that Trump has been an absolute disaster for our planet. He’s bought and paid for by the fossil fuel companies and his new “big, beautiful bill” will cut crucial clean energy credits that our nation desperately needs.
He doesn’t care that future generations will be left with a destroyed planet because he’ll be long gone and his descendants will be rich enough to insulate themselves from the worst of the devastation. The time to hold him accountable is now.
