Bondi Appoints Ed Martin to Probe James and Schiff in Fraud Allegations

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has named Ed Martin, a seasoned lawyer and former Missouri Republican Party chairman, as special prosecutor to investigate allegations of mortgage fraud against New York Attorney General Letitia James and Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.). The move, announced on August 8, 2025, escalates tensions between the Trump administration and prominent Democrats, with separate grand juries in Virginia and Maryland tasked to examine claims against James and Schiff, respectively. The investigations stem from a criminal referral by Housing Director Bill Pulte, accusing James of misrepresenting a five-unit Brooklyn property as a four-unit dwelling to secure favorable loan terms and Schiff of falsifying bank documents for better mortgage rates over 16 years.

James, who led a 2022 civil fraud case against Trump, and Schiff, a vocal Trump critic, have denied the allegations, with James’s office labeling the probe a “weaponization” of the Justice Department. Martin, known for his aggressive tactics and prior role in Trump’s “Operation Whirlwind,” is expected to pursue the cases relentlessly, raising concerns about political retribution. The investigations, still in early stages, have already prompted subpoenas for James’s office, focusing on her Trump lawsuit. Critics argue the probes aim to discredit Democratic adversaries, while supporters see them as accountability for alleged misconduct. The outcome could reshape political and legal landscapes as Trump’s second term unfolds.
