SACRAMENTO, August 25, 2025 — President Donald Trump escalated his clash with California, vowing to cut federal funding to school districts that defy his administration’s transgender policies. In a Thursday Truth Social post, Trump declared, “Any California school district that doesn’t adhere to our Transgender policies, will not be funded.” The threat targets California’s refusal to comply with a February executive order banning transgender girls from girls’ sports, which Trump claims violates Title IX protections for female athletes.
The Justice Department sued California in July, alleging the state’s policy allowing transgender athletes to compete based on gender identity discriminates against cisgender girls. The Department of Health and Human Services also terminated a $12 million sex education grant, citing “radical gender ideology” in curricula. California’s Interscholastic Federation, backed by a 2013 state law, continues to permit transgender athletes to compete, prompting Trump’s latest warning. Governor Gavin Newsom, a vocal critic, called the move a “cynical distraction” from educational inequities, noting federal funds—$861 million for Los Angeles alone—are critical for low-income students.
Critics warn defunding could devastate schools, while supporters argue it protects fairness in sports. Legal challenges are expected, as courts have previously blocked similar federal actions for discriminatory intent. The dispute, part of a broader culture war, places California’s 6 million students at the center of a national debate over transgender rights and federal overreach.
