Tim Walz Faces FBI Probe Over Alleged Fraud in Minnesota Program

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is under intense scrutiny as the FBI investigates a “massive scheme” to defraud the state’s Housing Stabilization Services program, which uses Medicaid funds to support housing for older adults and people with disabilities. On August 25, 2025, federal agents executed search warrants at eight Twin Cities locations tied to five providers accused of billing for undelivered services. This marks the third major fraud probe under Walz’s tenure, following the $300 million Feeding Our Future scandal and a $20 million autism center fraud case. Republicans, led by Representative Kristin Robbins, slam Walz for lax oversight, with the state’s Department of Human Services (DHS) criticized for failing to curb fraud despite warnings.

Walz, the former 2024 Democratic vice-presidential nominee, insists his administration has implemented safeguards, including AI-driven fraud detection, and pledges full cooperation with law enforcement. He told reporters, “If you commit these crimes in Minnesota, you’ll get caught.” However, a June 2024 state audit faulted the Minnesota Department of Education for inadequate oversight, and critics argue Walz’s inaction has cost taxpayers millions. The GOP-led “Fight the Fraud” committee is pushing for a federal audit of DHS, with House Speaker Lisa Demuth calling the fraud culture “endemic.”

The investigation, still in early stages, has no confirmed dollar amount for the alleged fraud but adds pressure on Walz as he considers a 2026 re-election bid. The outcome could shape his political future amid a polarized climate.
