“They Need to Be Held Accountable”: ActBlue Caught in “Very Illegal” Activities, Congress Takes Action

In response to shocking allegations of fraud, House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil (R-WI) has introduced the SHIELD Act to prevent ActBlue, a major Democratic National Committee funding network, from accepting donations from foreign entities.

For context, ActBlue, a Democratic fundraising platform, has been criticized for allegedly violating campaign finance law, facilitating foreign political donations, and committing identity theft. Republicans, looking to keep foreign money out of our elections, have been looking for a way to bring the corrupt organization down.

After Steil introduced the bill, ActBlue was forced to implement a new policy on September 9, 2024, to “automatically reject donations that use foreign prepaid/gift cards, domestic gift cards, are from high-risk/sanctioned countries, and have the highest level of risk as determined.” Critics have noted that this is a common way for foreign actors to influence American elections.

Responding to the change in the policy, the brave Republican noted that there is still more work to be done. He said, “While this is a positive step forward, there is still more work to be done to ensure our campaign finance system is fully protected from fraud and unlawful foreign interference.”

Building on this point, Steil said, “The documents provided to the Committee also confirm that ActBlue still accepted these concerning payment methods in July, a period when Democrats raised a record number of campaign money before implementing these safeguards.”

Emphasizing the importance of election integrity, the Republican said, “We must keep working to ensure that no foreign funds were illegally funneled into U.S. political campaigns during this election cycle,” adding, “It is also critical that we enact lasting reforms to prevent illicit contributions in future election cycles.”

Concluding his remarks on the vital bill, he declared, “Advancing legislation like the SHIELD Act will permanently close these vulnerable loopholes and safeguard the integrity of our campaign finance system.”.
