The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has moved swiftly to suspend the teaching certifications of over 100 educators across the state, rendering them ineligible to work in public schools, following their alleged endorsement of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The action, announced by Governor Greg Abbott on September 15, 2025, comes amid an investigation into approximately 180 complaints about inappropriate social media posts made after Kirk’s fatal shooting on September 10 at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
Kirk, the 31-year-old co-founder of Turning Point USA, was killed by a sniper during a rally, an event that has sparked nationwide outrage and led to disciplinary measures against educators in multiple states. In Texas, the TEA’s Educator Investigations Division has reviewed posts deemed to incite violence or show callous disregard for the tragedy. Commissioner Mike Morath stated that while educators must uphold professionalism, comments celebrating Kirk’s death cross into unacceptable territory, warranting license revocation.
Several districts have already acted: Klein ISD fired a social studies teacher for calling Kirk a “racist, homophobic, misogynist, transphobic nasty person,” and Goose Creek Consolidated ISD initiated termination proceedings against another for suggesting his death was “consequences of his actions.” A Baylor University graduate student lost her placement in Midway ISD over similar remarks. Abbott emphasized that these educators “called for or incite violence,” justifying the suspensions to protect students and uphold ethical standards.
The Texas American Federation of Teachers decried the moves as a “political witch hunt,” arguing that First Amendment rights allow civil discourse outside the classroom. Critics fear a chilling effect on free speech, while supporters, including Republican lawmakers, praise the accountability. As the TEA’s review continues, the case highlights escalating tensions over political expression in education, with over a dozen similar firings nationwide.
