Texas Democrat’s Defiant Stand: Sleeping in Capitol Over GOP Escort Mandate

In a dramatic act of defiance, Texas State Representative Nicole Collier has taken to sleeping in the House chamber, refusing a Republican mandate requiring Democratic lawmakers to sign permission slips for law enforcement escorts. The Fort Worth Democrat’s protest stems from a contentious redistricting battle, where GOP leaders, backed by President Donald Trump, aim to redraw Texas’s congressional maps to favor Republicans in the 2026 midterms. Collier, joined briefly by colleagues Gene Wu and Vince Perez, spent Monday night on the chamber floor, livestreaming her resistance to what she calls an “unlawful confinement.”

The escort mandate, imposed by House Speaker Dustin Burrows, targets Democrats who fled the state earlier this month to block a quorum, delaying the redistricting vote. After returning to Austin, Democrats faced civil arrest warrants and now must agree to constant surveillance by Texas Department of Public Safety officers to leave the Capitol. Collier, representing a majority-minority district, decried the mandate as “demeaning” and an overreach of power, arguing it undermines her dignity and her constituents’ rights. She has filed a habeas corpus petition, alleging illegal confinement.

Supporters, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, have rallied behind Collier, while critics see her actions as grandstanding. The Texas House regained quorum Monday, setting the stage for a Wednesday vote on the maps. Collier’s stand, supported by a livestream that drew thousands, underscores a broader fight against perceived Republican overreach. As tensions rise, her protest highlights the deepening partisan divide in Texas politics.
