Rep. Al Green Announces New Impeachment Push Against Trump

Houston Democratic Representative Al Green declared on August 5, 2025, his intention to file fresh articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, marking his sixth attempt to oust the president. Speaking on the House floor, Green accused Trump of authoritarianism, pointing to his proposed U.S. takeover of the Gaza Strip and unauthorized strikes on Iranian nuclear sites as violations of constitutional checks and balances. Green’s resolution labels Trump a “threat to democracy,” echoing his previous efforts during Trump’s first term, all of which failed to secure House approval.

Green’s latest move, reported by Politico, follows his May 2025 filing of H.Res.415, which cited Trump’s alleged disregard for court orders and democratic norms. His persistence comes despite a Republican-controlled House, where Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed the effort as a “publicity stunt.” Democrats, including caucus leader Pete Aguilar, have signaled little support, focusing instead on 2026 midterm strategies. Green’s censure in February 2025 for disrupting Trump’s congressional address underscores his confrontational approach, with the congressman vowing a “grassroots” movement to rally public support.

Critics, including Senator John Cornyn, argue Green’s repeated attempts are futile and divisive, while supporters see them as a stand against unchecked power. Legal experts note that impeachment requires a House majority and a two-thirds Senate vote for conviction, making success unlikely. As Trump navigates foreign policy and domestic controversies, Green’s campaign keeps the impeachment debate alive, highlighting deep partisan divides.
