Ilhan Omar Faces Backlash Over Alleged Anti-American Remarks, Sparks Removal Calls

Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar is embroiled in controversy following accusations of smearing America during a January 2024 speech in Minneapolis. Speaking in Somali at a Puntland election celebration, Omar allegedly said the U.S. government would follow Somali-American directives to protect Somalia’s interests, prompting outrage from Republicans like House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, who called the remarks “anti-American” and demanded her resignation. A translation by the Minnesota Reformer later debunked the viral version as inaccurate, showing Omar instead urged civic engagement among Somalis, stating, “The U.S. government will do what we tell them to do.” Despite the clarification, calls for her removal from Congress persist.

Omar, a Somali-American and member of the progressive “Squad,” has faced similar accusations before, notably after 2019 comments criticized as antisemitic, leading to her 2023 ouster from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Critics, including Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who introduced a censure resolution in February 2024, argue Omar’s rhetoric undermines U.S. interests. Greene even suggested deportation, a move Omar dismissed as “rooted in xenophobia and Islamophobia.” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the censure “frivolous,” defending Omar’s right to speak.

The controversy has reignited debates over Omar’s loyalty, with supporters arguing her critics exploit her identity as a Muslim refugee. Omar narrowly won her August 2024 primary against Don Samuels, signaling strong local support. However, the persistent attacks highlight the polarized climate surrounding her tenure as legal and ethical battles loom.
