ICE and Border Patrol Launch Nationwide Crackdown, Stirring Tensions

A massive immigration enforcement operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Border Patrol is sweeping from Los Angeles to small towns nationwide, targeting undocumented immigrants under President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda. Launched in June 2025, the campaign has detained over 56,600 individuals, with 29% having criminal convictions, according to ICE data. Operations in Los Angeles, including raids in Paramount and Compton, have sparked protests, with clashes erupting between demonstrators and law enforcement. The deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops in California, authorized by Trump on June 9, has intensified accusations of heavy-handed tactics.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, speaking in Los Angeles on June 13, vowed to continue the crackdown, stating, “We will liberate communities from criminal aliens.” The operation aligns with Trump’s executive order to end “catch-and-release” policies, prioritizing deportations of those with final removal orders. Supporters, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, praise the effort for restoring order, citing arrests of MS-13 gang members and drug traffickers. However, critics, led by California Governor Gavin Newsom, argue the raids violate constitutional rights, with a federal judge issuing a July 11 order halting “indiscriminate” arrests in Los Angeles due to alleged racial profiling. The ACLU and other groups have filed lawsuits, claiming agents target Latinos without reasonable suspicion, disrupting communities and local economies.

As protests grow, the crackdown underscores a deepening divide over immigration policy, with both sides digging in for a prolonged battle over sovereignty and civil liberties.
