In a landmark achievement, the U.S. Marshals Service, alongside 20 federal, state, and local agencies, recovered 60 critically missing children in Florida’s Tampa Bay area during a two-week mission dubbed Operation Dragon Eye, announced on June 23, 2025. Described as the largest child recovery operation in U.S. history, the effort targeted youths aged 9 to 17 in Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties, many at risk of human trafficking, sexual exploitation, or violence. Eight suspects were arrested, facing charges including human trafficking, child endangerment, and drug possession.
The operation provided immediate physical and psychological care to the children, with BayCare Health System offering medical support and organizations like Redefining Refuge ensuring trauma-informed recovery. Several rescued girls were pregnant, including one carrying her trafficker’s child, highlighting the operation’s urgency. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier emphasized, “Protecting our kids is my top priority. If you victimize children, you’re going to prison.” The Florida Department of Children and Families played a key role, with 10 agents helping recover 26 children and securing safe housing.
Governor Ron DeSantis’ $4.9 million allocation for trafficking victim support bolstered the mission. U.S. Marshal William Berger noted the operation’s unique focus on follow-up care to prevent re-victimization. The success underscores Florida’s commitment to combating child exploitation, with ongoing investigations to ensure justice. The effort has sparked hope, offering these children a chance at healing and a safer future.
