Ed Martin Probes Adam Schiff After Blocked U.S. Attorney Nomination

In a dramatic twist, Ed Martin, a staunch Trump ally, has been appointed special prosecutor to investigate Democratic Senator Adam Schiff for alleged mortgage fraud, just months after Schiff led efforts to block Martin’s nomination as U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C. Schiff, a California senator and Senate Judiciary Committee member, placed an indefinite hold on Martin’s nomination in April 2025, citing Martin’s lack of prosecutorial experience and alleged abuses, including dismissing charges against January 6 defendants he once represented. Democrats, rallying behind Schiff, successfully derailed Martin’s confirmation, with Senator Dick Durbin and others demanding ethics probes into Martin’s conduct.

Now, Attorney General Pam Bondi has tapped Martin to lead a Maryland grand jury investigation into Schiff, sparked by a Federal Housing Agency referral alleging Schiff falsified documents to secure favorable loan terms on a Maryland property. Schiff’s attorney, Preet Bharara, dismissed the claims as “false, stale, and long debunked,” accusing Martin of partisan bias. The investigation, announced August 8, 2025, also targets New York Attorney General Letitia James, raising concerns of political retribution. Critics argue Martin’s appointment reflects Trump’s weaponization of the Justice Department, while supporters see it as accountability for Schiff’s actions. The irony of Martin now probing his chief opponent has fueled debates over justice and vendettas in Washington.
