In a contentious move, every House Democrat opposed the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” passed on July 3, 2025, which included historic tax cuts championed by President Donald Trump. The legislation, approved by a 217-215 vote, eliminates federal taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits, alongside a $4,000 deduction for seniors. It aims to deliver $4.5 trillion in tax relief over a decade, boosting take-home pay for workers like waitresses and electricians by up to $1,400 annually. Republicans hailed it as a lifeline for the middle class, with 77 million voters backing the agenda in 2024.
Democrats, however, labeled the bill a “betrayal,” criticizing potential Medicaid cuts of $880 billion and arguing it favors the wealthy. They claim the tax breaks, expiring in 2028, are temporary and misleading, with only 24% of Social Security recipients under 65 eligible for the senior deduction. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called it a “Republican rip-off,” warning of harm to social programs. Yet, critics note Democrats’ rejection ignored popular measures, like no tax on tips, which even Vice President Kamala Harris endorsed during her campaign. The vote has fueled GOP narratives of Democrats taxing the working class, with the 2026 midterms looming as a referendum on these divides.
