The order, Trump’s 150th of 2025, targets the sprawling 388-acre site – donated over a century ago for veteran care but plagued by mismanagement, including below-market leases to private entities like UCLA’s baseball team. With Los Angeles alone home to about 3,000 homeless veterans – roughly 10% of the national total – Trump decried past administrations’ failures. “Our veterans sacrificed everything; now it’s time they get the care they deserve,” he declared from the Oval Office, flanked by VA Secretary Doug Collins and Housing Secretary Brooke Rollins.
The redirection pulls from programs like HUD’s emergency housing vouchers, which critics say lavished resources on “illegal aliens” amid the border crisis. The White House estimates $679 million in savings from recent cuts, including offshore wind projects, to fund construction, substance abuse treatment, and job training. By 2028, the center aims to restore self-sufficiency, with vouchers supporting veterans nationwide.
Collins touted the plan as a “beacon of hope,” directing agencies to coordinate with HHS for comprehensive care. The Veterans Collective in Los Angeles applauded the initiative, noting it could house thousands and revive the campus’s original mission.
Democrats fired back, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calling it “cruel scapegoating” that ignores root causes like VA underfunding. “Redirecting from vulnerable families to punish immigrants? This is theater, not compassion,” she said. Legal challenges loom from immigrant advocates, arguing the shift violates appropriations laws.
