Debate Rages Over JB Pritzker’s Competence as Illinois Governor

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, now seeking a third term in 2026, faces mounting criticism over his leadership, with detractors labeling him incompetent amid economic and social challenges. Critics point to Illinois’ population decline of 338,957 since 2018, the nation’s second-worst, driven by outmigration. The state’s 5% unemployment rate ranks third-highest nationally, with job growth lagging at 43rd for total jobs and 44th for private-sector jobs. Wage growth has been the fourth-slowest since 2018, and Illinois’ business tax climate has worsened under Pritzker’s $5.24 billion in tax hikes, including a $1.1 billion increase in the 2025 budget. Education outcomes have also declined, despite $2.5 billion more in annual school spending.

Supporters, however, highlight Pritzker’s achievements. Elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022 with 55% of the vote, he balanced the state budget, eliminated a multi-billion-dollar bill backlog, and secured nine credit rating upgrades. His policies, like raising the minimum wage to $15 by 2025 and legalizing recreational cannabis, have bolstered the economy, now over a trillion dollars. Illinois ranks among the top five states for infrastructure and workforce development, with free community college tuition and a top-10 public university. Pritzker’s vocal opposition to Trump’s policies, including resisting federal immigration raids, has solidified his progressive credentials.

The polarized views reflect Illinois’ complex challenges. Critics argue Pritzker’s policies drive residents away, while supporters see him as a transformative leader. As 2026 looms, his competence remains a contentious issue.
