Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan Switches to Democratic Party

Former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan, a lifelong Republican, announced on August 5, 2025, that he has officially joined the Democratic Party, citing a profound misalignment with the GOP’s direction under President Donald Trump. Duncan, who served as Georgia’s lieutenant governor from 2019 to 2023, detailed his decision in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution op-ed, stating his “political heart changed” due to struggles to reconcile Republican policies with his Christian faith and the principle of “loving thy neighbor.” His switch follows a public fallout with the Georgia GOP, which expelled him in January 2025 for endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race.

Duncan criticized GOP stances on healthcare, Medicaid, gun control, and immigration, particularly Trump’s $911 billion Medicaid cuts and mass deportation policies. He highlighted that 11.4% of Georgians lack health insurance, with 85% in working households unable to afford coverage. His tenure saw him challenge Trump’s 2020 election fraud claims, notably rejecting efforts to appoint alternate electors as unconstitutional. This stance, alongside his push for policies like Michael’s Law, alienated him from the GOP base.

The move, which follows similar defections by former Representatives Joe Walsh and David Jolly, has sparked debate. Republicans branded Duncan a “RINO,” while Democrats welcomed his focus on inclusive governance. Duncan hinted at a potential 2026 gubernatorial run as a Democrat, aiming to “turn chaos into conversations.” His defection underscores deepening divisions within the GOP and shifting political alignments ahead of the midterms.
