Experts are issuing an urgent warning about the severe and irreversible lung damage linked to vaping, emphasizing that prevention is the only effective strategy. This damage includes bronchiolitis obliterans, commonly known as “popcorn lung,” a condition that causes permanent scarring and obstruction of the lung’s small airways.
Professor Donal O’Shea, a chemistry expert, highlights diacetyl as a primary culprit. This chemical, also used in microwave popcorn factories and found in many e-liquids, causes inflammation that leads to irreversible scarring in the lungs. Professor O’Shea stresses that once this damage occurs, treatment options are extremely limited, focusing only on symptom management like bronchodilators, or in severe cases, potentially a lung transplant – neither of which reverses the fundamental damage.
While diacetyl is banned in e-cigarettes in the UK and EU, it unfortunately persists in illicit products and remains legal in US vapes. Compounding the risk are other harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, plus over 180 flavouring agents used in e-liquids, many of which have not been tested for safety when heated and inhaled. Experts caution that cumulative exposure to these substances significantly increases the risk of severe respiratory conditions.
The critical message from health professionals is clear: because the lung damage from conditions like popcorn lung is permanent and treatment offers little hope of recovery, avoidance is the only reliable defense. Waiting for symptoms to appear means the damage is already done. Therefore, experts unequivocally state that preventing exposure to the harmful chemicals in vapes is paramount to safeguarding long-term lung health.
